The Internal medicine program at Lincoln Medical Center provides a scholarly environment that ensures resident participation in the educational and scholarly activities. The program is supported by the Institution and the GME committee in the pursuit of academic goals and objectives and provision of the highest quality of training in research and scholarly activities to all of our graduates. To meet the research goal, the Internal Medicine Program at Lincoln offers the following resources to the residents and faculty staff.

PROGRAM & INSTITUTIONAL RESOURCES FOR SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES

Faculty Mentors
The Department of Internal medicine is staffed with key faculty experienced in research methodology who are readily available to mentor residents on research projects. The Research Director coordinates all research activities in the department as well as interdepartmental and other collaborative efforts.

Medical Library & Online Resources:
Library provides on-line access to all major literature databases and textbooks in Internal medicine and other specialties. A dedicated librarian in search strategies and database orientation trains residents. Access to all databases is available 24/7 at all computer terminals in the institution facilitate participation in scholarly activities such as conferences, literature review and references. A poster machine has been installed in the library for resident use to assist in designing posters for presentation at conferences. A dedicated research center with modern computer equipment, software and books is available for all residents and faculty to organize manuscript preparation, online searches and data management. In addition, a dedicated high-speed computer workstation, statistical software and books are available in this center for research support.

Research Assistant Program:
The GMEC with the support and guidance of the institution's administrative leadership has developed a research assistant program to meet research needs of the residency training programs and assist faculty and staff in research projects.

Cornell Analytic Services Support:
An intensive Research Methodology course is conducted annually by the faculty of the School of Public Health at Cornell College of Medicine.
The course is mandatory for all PGY-2s.
Cornell Analytic services under the Leadership of the Chief of Public Health at Cornell provide expert advice on design, statistical methods and analysis of research projects.

Research Presentation support:
Residents are provided time and travel support to regional and national meetings for presentations.

Empire State Clinical Investigator Program (ECRIP) Research Fellowship
In 2007-08, Lincoln has been awarded funding by the New York Department of Health under the ECRIP pool, for a dedicated one year fellow at Lincoln. This fellow will be involved in research projects in the department of medicine and collaborate with residents in their projects as well.

INSTITUTIONAL PROCESSES FACILITATING SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:

Institution-wide Research Competition:

The IRB Committee conducts yearly research competition for all residents. In this forum, residents participate and present posters. Individual prizes are granted for the best research posters and clinical vignettes. The competition is funded by the Medical Staff

Departmental research competition:
An annual research competition is conducted by the training program and individual prizes are awarded for best case report and research paper.

Program requirement for residents:
Internal Medicine residency training program requires all of the residents to participate and complete at least one scholarly activity during their training period.

Journal Clubs:
Journal clubs are regularly conducted as a part of the didactic curriculum. The residents are supervised and evaluated by the research director and qualified faculty during their presentation

Research rotation:
Each resident spends two weeks in the research rotation i.e. 2 residents within the usual 4-week period rotation schedule. All residents rotate through elective under the supervision of the faculty research director. A pre-selected faculty mentor can also act as project guide. Residents are expected to participate actively in the components of the rotation. Guidelines are provided as handouts for all components of the rotation. The faculty research director meets the resident daily during the research rotation to oversee participation of the resident in the various components as well as discuss topics required for understanding biostatistics and research methodology. Based on performance of the resident among the various research rotation components, an ACGME competency based evaluation is provided at the end of the rotation. Residents are also asked to submit a research elective evaluation.
